07 Chaparral Sunesta 214 - 1st boat, it did not come with transom straps. When I got home I put them on and they rub against the boat. Is this normal? Will mark up the gel coat? It seems that if I move the winch post forward approx. 1" the straps will clear the transom. Any reason why I shouldn't do that?

It'll increase your tongue weight by a wide margin - you'll have to move the axles to compensate. you know those padded things people put on their seat belts? might work.

Or, you could do what my father always did when he bought a brand new pickup. He has a citrus farm. He'd buy the pickup, then drive it down a couple of orchard rows, so the tree branches would scratch up the sides of the truck.

He figured that it was a work truck and was going to get scratched up anyhow, so he just did it right away so he wouldn't worry about it. :D

If the straps are tight and the boat doesn't jiggle around, they won't bother. Mine have soft rubber pads that rest agains the boat.

Use something to pad it, but I'm not sure moving the boat by only 1" will make a significant difference.

If they're tight they shouldn't rub. Put a piece of cardboard under them on the corners. I'm with RNDN, moving 1" won't matter.

Re: Transom Straps

try the straps from west marine, they have pads attached, and while my boat doesnt rub, it seems like they would help in your situation.

When put on snuggly they won't move and therefore not cause any cosmetic problems. Most boat/trailer combinations work like yours. Never had a problem with mine in 6 years.

I use some old carpet underlay. Works great.

Just have a welding shop make you some eyelets that stick out past the back of the hull by 1 inch or so. then use the eyelets to hook the transom straps to that.
