Does anyone have an opinion on which 2 Stroke Oil would be the best to use in my 1981 75hp Evinrude? Mercury Quick Silver seem to be the predominate brand on the shelf in all the stores in the Oklahoma City area. Is the Quick Silver better oil than the Johnson/Evinrude? Will my engine better on either brand?
My Oil/Fuel mix is 50:1

Uh-Oh, here we go again. C'mon member formerly know as LubeDude where are you. Just kidding db I know that you are seriously inquiring about this. There are several oil threads if you do a search for them. It was a running gag for a while. I myself use the WallyWorld stuff with Seafoam in each tank. I'm sure the Quicksilver and the other brands have better stuff in them but I personally can't justify the price.

Since the formulas are propriatory information, there really isn't any way to tell what you are getting. If the label bears the NMMA logo and says NMMA Certified TC-W3 then you know that at least it has been tested and passed the requirements. "Meets TC-W3 certification" or some othr such double-talk is not the same thing. Has to have the logo. It could actually be better than what's required, but who's to know??

Just did a search on google about 2 stroke oil, I agree this topic seems to be a can of worms. I was curious if one brand over the other would make a difference in the way the engine performs.

If it says that it is TC-W3? oil, then it's NMMA certified. It has to be to bear the TC-W3? logo, which is a registered trademark of NMMA.

Re: 2 Stroke Oil

There are three basic types of TCW3 certified oil: 1) Conventional TCW3 found on nearly every engine oil shelf in the country. Even grocery stores and the corner 24hr store sells it. 2) Synthetic Blends (a mixture of conventional and synthetic) and 3) Full synthetic. Prices vary all over the map and all are TCW3 certified so if your engine calls for a TCW3 all three work well. Blended and full synthetic smoke less and can be purchased just as cheap as conventional oil if you shop around.

I use fully synthetic Pennzoil TC-W3, US$24/gallon @ Walmart. It smokes less and is actually biodegradable if it makes a diff to you.

My suggestion is to use the best quality marine grade 2 stroke oil you can afford. check with the engine manufacturers and use what they recomend, cheap and nasty no name brabnd oils are not the way to go. What you save in oil you will spend on motor repairs.

Re: 2 Stroke Oil

If it meets the TCW-3 requirement then it's good to go !!!! Used to use regular motor oil at a pinch in motorcycles. Just had to shake the tank each time to re-mix again.
Not suggesting for one second to do that with an outboard but just trying to illustrate the point that the oil in the gas is for lubrication purposes only and if it gets in there to lube things up then it has done its job. Smoke more or smoke less is a personal choice. I have never had an issue with whatever TCW-3 oil I have used. My motor smokes from initial start up when cold and choked and always has. Then runs just fine from there with no smokiness whatever oil I have in there.

Anything you get now is better than was available when it was new.
