Re: what prop to use
How high is up? OK -- You caught me in a grumpy mood so you will just have to hang in there. Why? Because I just got done typing a long description of why certain data is required in order for us to provide any reasonable recommendations. Your post popped up next and now all the hair I just pulled out of my head is laying on my keyboard. So we will use this as a learning experience for you. I happen to believe it does no good whatsoever to just answer people's questions without asking for some interaction or getting people to think a little and apply some deductive reasoning. Otherwise the very same question gets asked again down the road and the poster could easily figure things out using the same logic applied to the previous question. Did I ask you to hang in there?? Ok lets get to the point. I know that you have a 1977 85 HP Evinrude but that's all I know (about your engine). I do however know lots of other useless stuff. I do have a few questions for you: 1) Is this engine attached to a boat? 2) If so, what type of boat is it (rowboat, bow rider, cuddy, ski, fish&ski, runabout, aluminum, fiberglass, tri hull, v-hull, flat bottom, jon, bassboat, pontoon, barge, houseboat etc). I'll be gentle here -- Don't you think that might be important to know? 3) Since I got in trouble "assuming" the last person I tried to help actually owned the boat and had driven it a time or two, I need to ask -- do you own this engine and boat and have you actually driven it? You might not think that's important but I found out it is. 4) Does this engine have a propeller? If it does, what is it's diameter and pitch (it should have numbers stamped on the outside of the hub or on the inner hub around the prop nut. I will be gentle again -- don't you think this might be important? 5) Does this boat have a tachometer and a speedometer? And if it does, have you ever driven this boat at wide open throttle and if you did, what was the maximum speed and what were the rpms at that speed with an average load? This just might be important. Did I ask you to hang with me? I've now given you a homework assignment and when you post the response to those questions I will give you my thoughts. But with only an engine year and HP there is no flippin' way anyone can come close to making a reasonable recommendation -- except perhaps Walleyed who eats, sleeps, dreams and tests props. Lastly -- go to the link below which is right here on iBoats. There is a list of props for your engine. Pick one -- because with the little data provided you can do as good a job as I can. Boy I feel better now.

[[Take this lightly sir -- I'm simply having fun trying to make a point in the hopes others read this before they post a "What Prop" question.]]
