I have a 78, or 79 1500 merc #7093365, i rebuilt the carbs+fuel pump, new floats. When it had been running slow, (like when idling from boat dock), and i go to give it fill throttle, it bogs, and sputters, and smokes so when it does this i pull it into neutral let it idle for about a minute, then put in gear and give her throttle, and it bogs a little, but winds up and goes. When running fast, between half throttle and full throttle,,, it has lots of power, and runs perfect!. I have been monkeying with trying to set the carbs up (air fuel screws) , but boy it seems a little tough to do when i have never messed with 3 carbs before. Was wondering if this sounds like i just have to keep messing with the carbs,,, or could be a different problem?
thanx

Rippin, 1977 was the last year for the Merc 1500 inline six. Merc made a 1400 in '78 and '79 (i think), which was esentially identical.

You have the classic case of misadjusted carbs. What I usually do is to set the idle mixture screws to 1-1/4 turns out, from lightly seated. Run the motor in gear and adjust the carbs at idle until it runs smooth. Now when you try to accelerate, it will just die. Now open the top carb 1/8 turn and try to accelerate. if it still dies, open the mid carb 1/8 turn, and try to accelerate again. If it still dies, open the bottom carb 1/8 turn and try once more. If it still dies, repeat sequence. You are looking to set the idle mixture rich enough to accelerate but lean enough to still idle reasonably.
