I just acquired a 65 hp mercury serial# 3076696 and I can't seem to find out what year it is? I've tried the websites this forum has offered, but no luck. Can anyone help me? This motor has sat for about 15 years. It cranks fine, has fuel, but no spark. I think I need to get the internal wiring starting with the plug on the side of the motor on in because the shielding is off most of the wires. And I imagine I need to know what year in order to get it? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, Doug

Re: 65hp Mercury No fire/What year?

I have the set of controls that were with the motor the last time it ran. There is no key and the controls are shot. I have it plugged in anyway. Could I not be getting spark because the key needs to be in the on position? And since I don't have a key to turn it on it's not making a connection? I am using a set of jumper cables to jump across the starter to get it to turn the motor over. I then took a piece of wire and jumped it from the positive on the starter to the solenoid to see if the solenoid was bad, but I still don't have any spark coming out of the solenoid or power pack. I'm lost. No spark either because of the key issue or solenoid? I'm gonna try to buy controls on ebay and most of the wiring has dry rot under the cover so I guess I should replace the wires too. But they are not touching anywhere and they are not frayed either. Is there any other places I can jumper across to rule out the solenoid? Maybe I was jumpering to the input and not the output. I'm used to working on rider mowers' solenoids. These seem to be a little different. I'm frustrated, but I won't give up. It's my hobby:) Any guidance is much appreciated. Thanks, Doug

Even if the wires look ok on the outside, if they are corroded on the inside you'll have troubles.

That's the thing. They are corroded green but I figured I'd be getting some spark. I'm getting nothing on my volt meter. Should I look for the internal wiring for the motor? I see there's a set on ebay, but I don't know if it'll work. Nothing's ever easy, but I like a challenge! (as long as it doesn't involve too much money:)

Maybe wait until you get controls with a key so you can check things correctly.

thank you. That was sort of my idea too, but I wanted a second opinion. Do you think I should replace the bare wires too? Thanks, Doug

Is there some place that sells the wires from the male plug on the side of the motor on in? I think I found some used on ebay but I'm not sure they'll work
