I have a 1985 Johnson 88 HP and was wondering where the oil resevoir is located on the engine that mixes with the gas and how can I check to see the oil level. Thanks, Chad

Unless the engine has been converted back to premix, there will be two lines leading to the engine, one for gasoline and one for oil.

If it exists, trace the oil line back to the oil tank. If you've just bought this rig, check with the previous owner to find out what he may have done in the way of conversion if any.

I strongly suggest that you do not run that engine on plain gasoline unless you're sure that the VRO (automatic oil system) is intact.

The 88 SPLs did NOT have VRO systems from the factory. It would only have one if it was added later...

That fact had slipped my mind. The 88hp did not come equipped with the VRO setup but rather incorporated the normal smaller fuel pump whereas the fuel was required to be mixed with the oil. It was the 90hp that was equipped with the VRO in 1985.

However, as I think back, to my knowledge there was no 88hp manufactured in 1985. The 88hp, I believe, was manufactured only from 1988 thru 1990.

What is the model number of that engine? We need to know exactly what engine we're speaking of.

I had a 1990 Johnson 88 SPL and had to add oil in the gas tank whenever I filled up. I used a ratio of 50:1. Not sure if that ratio is ideal, it worked for me. If anyone knows what the ideal ratio is,please let me know. Thanks. Cris

I read 50 to1 is correct for your motor. Check with the manufacturer's web site to make sure.
