i have a 63 johnson 40 hp. what kind of fuel consumption should i expect from this motor. at wot i burn atound 3 gal per hour. i run a 14 to 1 prop but do not have a tach to know my rpm. do not believe i am over revving. i run a 32:1 fuel mix. have noticed several posts about running 50:1 and would like to know where i can find the info to determine if 50:1 would be ok for my motor. is there a serial number listing of what motors supposedly had different clearances? also are there electric trim motors available for this year? any answers would be greatly appreciated.

you can get an induction timing light with the tach feature, to check your wot rpms. if you are getting 3 gal per hour you are good. average rule of thumb, is to move the decimal of the hp to the left one place.
you will send a fortune to try to put together a working OEM t&t unit. better off with one of these, they been reliable for over 50 years.

Wow, they still make those things? I tried to find one without any sucess. They do work. Sort of a fancy crowbar.

None that I know of, Ron. This is from the Evinrude website:

"Q - What is the fuel/oil mix for my motor?

A - The following is generally true: 1958 and prior used 20:1, 1959 thru 1963 used 24:1, 1964 and newer use 50:1. High performance usage (racing) requires a ratio of 25:1. New engine break-in (not DI) requires 25:1."
