I would not use cedar for your stringers. I read that resin does not stick that well due to the natural oil present in the wood. I used pressure treated ply in my boat, just make sure it is dry. You can use regular grade exterior ply and laminate two pieces together for the stringer. You can also use the same for the transom.

Good luck and have a great day,

Rob.

Douglas fir also works well for stringers I've been told.

Re: My Project (with pics)

So the project has been moving pretty slow (I'm currently in university so I dont have much time on my hands). Anyways, Ill post more pics later on but we just about finish the stringers. All that needs to be done with them is to insert the proper cross members (the ones in the pic were just temp.) and fiber glass them to the boat. The strings are glued to the boat already with some special fiberglass glue. I've tried to rip out the stringers as a test and its solid.

But now I have a little question regarding the below pic. You see the cross member, is that suppose to be fiberglassed all the way to the hall so water can get into the front of the hall or is it ok if water does get up there? Last thing I want it the wood to start rotting agiain because replacing all of that (transom, floor, stringers) is a pain.

And my dad thing the drain hole is a little high and he wants to lower it by drilling another hole. Opinions? (we do have a water pump)

And how many layers of fiberglass mat do i need of the stringers?

Crap...i just realized something. Am I suppose to have fiberglass running up the transom? Right now All i have is the epoxy resin covering the transom, no mat.

And is it a good idea to have fiberglass running from the transom to the hull?

Thanks

Ohh, and weekend I plan on finishing the stringers and floor so more pics will come.

Re: My Project (with pics)

glad your back on it....

yup the transom needs to be attached to the area.

its called tabbing........you want 2 layers.....one 8 inches wide, with 4 inches on the transom and 4 inches on the hull.......the other 12 inches wide a minimum 6 inch strip that grabs the transom and the hull around it.

if you read the hull extension thread there is a pic in there showing a transom tabbing

Hey I know it's not a great pic to show it but my brother had Velocity use a carbon fiber looking marine vynil for part of his seats and that stuff didn't get hot.

Not sure why but even after sitting in the sun all day it was no problem.

Check it out you might just use some as a real cool accent.

I am thinking a month is a little on the shy side. My advise is to multiply your projected time by 4 and you should be pretty close. Excellent project though I agree to keep to the vintage as much as possible it will look better. Great job in jumping right in there.
