Water Dripping from my Shift Cable (Question)

I emailed my mechanic a picture of water that drips from my shift cable and below is his response. He suggests I get the boat in within the next few weeks?
If it is just a drip can it wait until the end of the season?

Or can I do more harm by holding off?

Any know if this would be covered by Merc's extended warranty?

Merc 5.0 v-8 Alpha 1

"The water appears to be coming out of the shift cable. If it comes out when it comes out when the engine is running, the most likely cause is the shift shaft seal on the bell housing. Exhaust pressure is forcing water up the cable. This would require replacement of the seal and a new shift cable as there is now way to flush the salt from the cable."

Re: Water Dripping from my Shift Cable (Question)

Water leaking out of a shift cable isn't good, it will only get worse, and with salt water, expect the intake manifold, rocker cover, manifold bolts, head and anything under the leaking cable to go bad very quickly.

Ayuh,...........

Especially the Shift Cable Itself...... It's Already Junk......

If you don't Fix it Soon,...... You could be Replacing Alot of parts, which Won't be covered by your warranty,......
'cause Merc will write it off as Owner Neglect............
