Re: 1960 Sea King 35hp no spark

You need to pull the flywheel to get at the "works". Certainly needs points cleaned or replaced, and probably coils are cracked. You need a puller such as a vibration damper puller from the auto parts store. Don't buy an el cheapo one, it is not up to the task. Also get three 1/4-20 Grade-8 bolts to go with it. Remove the flywheel nut, screw in the 3 bolts 7/16", no more-no less. Then give it heck. When you think you are surely going to bust something it will pop off. If not, lift upward on the flywheel and give the center puller bolt a whack with a hammer. Not a sledgehammer, just give it a sharp whack. It's the shock that does it, not the bash.

If replacing the coils, align the laminated core ends with the machined edges on the armature (mounting) plate. Set points to .020" gap at widest opening. When replacing the flywheel, the shaft and flywheel tapers must be clean and dry and use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 60-65 ft/lbs. If you ignore this advice, you surely will shear the flywheel key and destroy the shaft and flywheel.

They have points, condensers and coils right here at iboats

The carb is overflowing because the float valve is not shutting off the flow. Clean the carb and put in a kit. Take it apart and look before you order a kit. If the float is OK, you can get a kit here at iboats. But if the float is deteriated, get an OEM kit from a dealer--it includes a new float. The one from iboats does not.

You said yourself that it is a Gale engine. I believe you are correct.

Re: 1960 Sea King 35hp no spark

Did you use a torque wrench to tighten the flywheel nut to 60-65 ft/lbs? If not, it may have sheared the key the first time you attempted to crank it.

Are you sure the coils look "like new"? Who came along and replaced them as it sat in the field for 14 years? Your description of the problem fits bad coils. It is notorious for that.

to: know nothing,

replace the coils/condensors/plugs/points/plug wires & test the magnets in the magneto. ====> it will save you BOTH grief & "paddling in" off the lake/bay/ocean.

the current coils may look OK but chances are that they are NOT. (old "big twin" OMC coils deteriorate inside, TOO.)

new coils/etc (the cheapest/best place i've found is from Sierra/NAPA store) cost little, when compared to being "out there" & "in a jam". (ask me how i know.= fyi, i've been "messing with" '50s-early '60s OMC motors since 1959.)

i would also change the waterpump impeller.

just good advice, sw
