Alpha One - Bad Vibration - Vacation Day 1 :(

Hi,
I have a 1975 18' Startcraft with a 1993 Alpha One 3.0 LX Mercruiser engine with an Alpha One outdrive. Yesterday I was cruising along and all of a sudden my outdrive started vibrating really bad. I was able to get back to the dock by going trolling speed. As soon as I accelerate, the vibration starts. I trimmed up the lower unit and there was nothing caught on the prop and it was not bent. The prop shaft was not loose or visibly bent and there doesn't appear to be any visible damage. If I rev the engine in neutral, there is no vibration, so I think I have it narrowed down to the outdrive. I just started my vacation so the thought of pulling the boat to have it sit at a repair shop for weeks saddens me :(

Any ideas what it could be? I am going to try a prop switch shortly but if that isn't the issue, what might be the likely cause? I had it apart a few weeks ago to do the water pump and I didn't notice any issues then. I greased all the fittings good before she went back together.
Thanks!!
Ron

I can't remember but does that involve messing with the bellows? I remember when I replaced those it was a P.I.A.
Thanks,
Ron

Nope,....... The U-Joints are inside the bellows......

You just gotta pull the 6 nuts on the back,+ the trim rams......
It should just slide off into your hands,......
And,..... Make Sure everythings Always in Forward Gear before ya Start.......

Cool, think I can do this in the water without pulling the boat. The trailer is at home but if there is going to be oil leakage I will find one and pull it put. Also, does that gasket that mates the upper housing to the gimbal housing (with the 6 bolts) require gasket sealer? Strangely enough I have a spare gasket kit.

I think not. Unless you have a lift.

Not sure if you understand that Coors is saying you can't do this with the boat in the water.

Yeah, I caught that. Not a big deal. I am just happy that I don't have to deal with the Bellows. Did anybody know if you need to use gasket sealer on the upper housing gasket?
Thanks,
Ron
