New Boat..Help my choose?

I am considering purchasing a new boat next season. I have been discussing the finer points of boat and boat building with my father in law. He is an engineer and used to work for Hydrodyne. He has verbalized an importance for a boat with a hand layed up hull, rather than one manufactured with a chopper gun. He advises that they will handle much heavy chop with considerably less cracking, damage, etc. I have searched and have not found info on anyone manufactures web site or otherwise, in regards to the hull manufacturing. Except for Glastron which advertises a VEC hull? Closed mold manufacturing? Is this just a plastic type hull with no type of reinforcement? If anyone knows, I am sure that I am not the only one out there who would like to know? Hydrodyne does not show any I/O on their website only Inboard direct drives. Which is not what I want. I have been told that Rinker still does hand lay-up, but I have not been impressed with the lines on the Rinker hulls. I plan on getting or would like to get a 19-21 foot bow-rider type runabout with a 5.0 or 5.7 I/O type engine. I don't really know what type of outdrive is better than the next? I have heard a lot of people say that the volvo drive is better than the mercuriser? What do you guys think? I am familiar with the mercuiser family or outdrives, alpha1,alpha2,bravo,etc?? What are the advantages of the differnt drives? Are they pretty much the same design only built to handle more torque as you go up in drive size?? I see a lot of Volvo drives offered? Are they better and what drives are avail. through volvo. I guess what I am really asking is what makes the best boat? As far as quailty, dependability, holding a resale value, best looking boat? I am not necessarily considering the best bang for the buck. Just the best bang, now and way down the road, when maintained and upkept. I would like to purchase a new boat next season, so if anyone cares to respond, how about a little seasoned advice.

Lots of questions for one thread! Hardly any boats are still being made with chopper gun only. Most use some fiberglass cloth in the layup (so called handlaid). Including the VEC for the Genmar brands. All of these topics have been covered many times before on this site. Try the Search tool here. Example - another thread on the various bowrider brands -

I have heard that Bayliners were all made with chopper gun only and that this was why people tend to stay away from them.

Skip - Your best bet would be to hit all the boat shows that you can even if you have to travel a bit. You didn't tell us whare you are or what kind of boating you intend in doing so anything we offer woud be a crap shoot.

I would also recommend that you spend some time at any of the ramps nearby and talk to owners as they launch and retrieve. Hit the dealers and see what they have to offer.

Having said that I would go for outboard power, hand layup (most all are) and one with no wood used in the construction anywhere.

......I had never heard of Hydrodyne before your thread.
If that is what your father-in-law thinks is the best boat....type in Hydrodyne search on ebay....there one for auction/sale there you can get for $10-15k or thereabouts.
Good luck.

Re: New Boat..Help my choose?

Skip - I debated on replying at all, but I reread your post and you sound just like me about a year ago. I am now a "first time boat owner" but definatly not new to boats. I think we have similar ways of purchasing things also; such as researching it to death.

I wanted to post my agreement with Solittle. Go look at them all. A boat show is the best place because you're not driving between dealers; and since there's alot of people the sales people are not all over you as much. I personally hated going to any dealer since I was usually the only one there at the time and the sales guys bugged the heck out of me. But the nice thing about being the only person at a dealer is they have the time to talk to you. Many of them took me out in the boat I was considering so I could drive it also. This was a HUGE piece of information in my decision.

Go ask the sales people the same questions you have here. Hop on boat trader and see what they sell for resale is your concern. Sit in them. Consider what you're using it for. Make sure it fits what YOU want. Forget about what everyone else says and pick something you like in your price range.

Otherwise I don't want to give any personal opinions either way about my research results because somebody will flame me for my own personal conculsion. I will say our decision was based on the fact that this year C-Dory raised the prices on the model we were going to buy so we picked something for lake fun in the interim.... ;)

You can also visit www.hydrodyners.com for more info regarding the "Dynes." They're awesome boats that have been around for years.

Re: New Boat..Help my choose?

i'm in full agreement with K Cook. i went to wisconsin this year to the unvailing of the New Bayliner 205. they are awesome boats. definately not the bayliner of the 80's 90's.
if i were looking for a new boat i would want a completely glass hull, not wood in the construction.. there are quite a few builders building these.

Hi. Your problem is my problem and I found a great web-site, www.yachtsurvey.com that will help you. The owner, D. H. Pascoe, a marine surveyor, has written a great book "Buyers' Guide to Outboard Boats", costs $40 or so. I've just received it and so far it's great. Hope this helps. Gcais.

Re: New Boat..Help my choose?

Professional surveys are a key step in the purchase of a big cruiser or yacht. But rare for trailer boats. Search the yachtsurvey site and you will find very little mention of bowriders or deckboats or fish-n-ski boats. These trailer boats do not experience the same life cycle as a big boat that spends its entire life in a wet slip. So the construction standards for these two different markets are different. Unfortunately, the yachtsurvey site does not point that out. The trailer sized boats that come nearest to satisfying the yachtsurvey standards are built by Grady-White. Take a look at the price tag on a Grady-White, it's a heck of a lot more $$ than the budget for most new boaters. If a G-W is small change for you, then by all means go for it. Just don't expect a Bayliner, Crownline, Four Winns, Glastron, Larson, Rinker, Tahoe, etc to measure up to those standards. Very different markets.
