Well my family has finally come around to my way of thinking. After the wife heals up ( From broken ankle) and we tie up any loose ends here in Missouri we will be moving down to gainesville Fla. ( I figure about 6 months baring and bad luck and no complications to the wifes injury ) My Father owns a Polaris/yahmaha dealership and a Traker boat dealership and I will be helping out there in some capacity. We visit him every year and I have always loved it there. Wife is not into hot wether but from what we have seen its not much hotter then here soooooo. With this being said I would love to hear more from the other Floridians on how they feel about their state.....You know the really importiant stuff....like fishing and entertainment :)

I'm sure the fishing is fine and the entertainment should be great since Gainsville is a college town. But check out real estate taxes and homeowners insurance (windstorm) they are thru the roof. Lately the Florida legislature and Governor Crist has been trying to fix the problems, but it was too little. Just my two cents.

Your wife is in for hell on earth. Yes, you're correct that it gets as hot up there as it does here... the only difference is how long those hot temps last compared to there, and the mosquitoes.
Summers here last 9 months, and that is a conservative average.
I am a third-generation Floridian, born in Miami, and after 55 years, have not acclimated to the brutality of the Floridian summer.
But our state's extortion rackets are a bit less draconian than some....The no income tax thing and 6% sales tax are a nice plus, compared to some other states' extrotion systems.

Re: Decided to move to Florida

Well we are not moving there blind ( Dad has been there 15 yrs) I do understand cost of living will be more (Taxes included ) and yes the heat is hot but...........I hate the cold.....I mean hate sooo......Will Ronda have it a little harder then here.....maybe but come winter yeee haaaa. The big draw for us is we have a bunch of family in the area on my side and her side. Funny thing is none of them are native floridians and all of them moved down on there own for their own reasons but as it stands 3/4 of our combined family will be within a 100 miles of gainesville. Hey 12ftr I hear you about mosquitoes but we are originally from Wis. and Florida aint got nothing on the mosquitos up north in the Wis. MN. area............She spent the first 1/2 of here life in California the other half in Wis, so she is more worried about Alligaters eating our kids and pets:) I tried to explain the chances of that are pretty slim but you know............

Re: Decided to move to Florida

Not had any contact with Wis mosquitoes, Mike. So I can't relate to them up there.
The winters here will definately make-up for the summers (provided you have an inside job for the summer). God bless air conditioners, man.

Yes, you DO have to watch your pets with gators, but only if you live by any body of fresh water. This is because they are prolific, and there is a movement afoot to have them stricken from the endangered species list. If not, I would be more concerned with the Florida frankenkitties, as the FWC imported a bunch of mountain lions from Colorado or some stinkin desert somewhere to interbread with them... Brilliant manuever for their job security, but not too bright for humans. Anyhoo, they (the panthers) are eating doggies down here in Naples and Lehigh.

Don't know about their population up there, but keep an eye on the pets.
The cost of buying a home here is insane, but the homestead exemption has been a real plus... Problem is, the state just changed ll that, so all bets are off. I may be moving UP to Wis soon

Well Frankenkitties are less scary to me then the gators but.........I think I will keep that under wraps. :) I will be coming under my Fathers wing to get started down there, so with some planning and a little help from pops we should be OK.......I am really excited about the fishing opportunities that will open up for me down there.........

Re: Decided to move to Florida

Definitely some good fishing around where you will be moving; I have a friend from here (St Pete) who just moved to Gainesville a short while back and he has been really getting into fishing the Prairies up there. It's considerably hotter in the interior of the state there than it is here by the water. It's even hotter in Tampa than it is in St. Pete because of our proximity to the Gulf.

As for mosquitoes... Eat lots of hot sauce, foods with vinegar, and garlic; avoid bananas a few hours before going out as your body secretes a particular odor while the oil is in your system that the mosquitoes are attracted to. Best bet if you're going out with a group of people, offer everyone else bananas while you munch on pickles and hot sauce!!!:D

Re: Decided to move to Florida

Well I love spicy food so eeee haaaa..........I have been researching the area online and Im getting pretty stoked. Fishing in every direction....Almost like it was for me in Wisconsin.....Man I miss fishin holes right by my home..........just want to take my time and do it right. When we moved here(Missouri) we came with little money and not much of a plan and it was tough so we are saving money and getting the work situation all together before we go. Also have to see if my wife will heal up from here surgery she just had on her ankle. They put screws and plates in her and Doc says sometimes they need to come out so we have to wait until we leave so we still have that insurance. I thought when we moved here we were moving to the south and winter would be easy.....Well not so we had an ice storm that knocked our power out for 10 days and it gets cold here....alot, just without much snow.....I mean come on if your gonna have cold a little snow at least is fun and helps x-mas to be more.......well like X-mas :) Next year I would like to be decorating a palm tree instead of a pine tree.
