Hey everyone...

I'm very new to boating here...about 3 hours new. I picked this up at a yardsale today for $350.00. Figured for that, I can't go too wrong and would be nice to tool around on the Sandy river here. Now I know very very little about boats. Did figure out the boat is a shade over 12' long and 4.5" at the tail. The outboard is a 73 Johnson 6 hp, and ordered a OEM manuel for it.

It's been sitting for awhile. Not going to mess with the engine til I get the manuel.

I'll start cleaning it up tommorow. What else should I do?? I needs lots of input and suggestions here please. Share your years of wisdom, your tidbits of knowlegde so I can get this out on the river.

Thank ahead of time.

Bill

Re: My Yardsale Boat

your on the right path, as far as waiting for your manual, you might look in the beginning of the ouboard section and there is a procedure for "waking a sleeping outboard" by Don S, (the guy is awesome) it will help you get started with the motor. while your waitin for the manual

inspect the boat from back to front and top to bottom closely looking for any holes or signs of rot.

congrads on your endeavor, and welcome to iboats

That advice saved my bacon (and a lot of time).

Looks like a nice rig for 350bucks.

Re: My Yardsale Boat

Thanks everyone. I'm going to clean it out today and see what I have. And far as looking for rot, the thing is fiberglass, doesn't have a floor per see, so I believe the only wood piece will be the transom. The back of the boat. Is that right?? New terms. Going to have to get my 7 year old to help me remember them all.

I'll take some pictures of the inside of it later and post them.

Thanks....Bill

A few more pics and questions

A few more pics and questions

Ohhh...this is fun already. Went and cleaned it out this morning. Abit of a mess but much better now. [[/U] A few more questions though on the pics at the bottom.

1. This rotton piece of wood is what is left of one of the bottom supports for the seats. Looks to me like the seats weren't attached to these, but rather just wedged between them. Going to have to redo these. What is the best way? Keep in mind there is no floor, but the bottom of the boat.

2. The gas can. Could someone please explain how this works before I start messing with it. My guesss is the bulb is used to prime the line. What is the correct operating procedures with this.

3. The inside bottom of the boat. See the paint peeling. It has lots of peeling paint and its a really really bad light green color. Other than that it looks good. I should repaint it. I've never worked with paint on fiberglass. It is just scraped down, feather sanded smooth, then primered and painted??

4. Cable. This is one of the control cables going to the motor. See the straight end. Something is missing. My guess something on the end of the cable but not sure. Thinking it might be worth putting in two new cables anyhow.

Once the manuel for the motor gets here, I'll have lots and lots of questions. One thing, figuring that this has sat for a few years. Should I go ahead and order a carb rebuild kit, points and plugs now...figuring that these should be replaced.

Thanks again....Bill.

Re: A few more pics and questions

Bill, give us a couple of pics of the total inside. did it just have a bench seat that went all the way across. if you are sure it's paint pealing sand or use wire wheel on a drill or angler grinder. i would not invest in any control parts as that motor can be tiller run, and you are going to want to change it. in the future. the bulb on the gas can is used to prime the carbs, and fuel pump. plan on and immediate impeller change, check the compression, and spark. points, plugs, coils and plug wires may need to be changed. also if the fuel lines are showing wear, cracks replace them.

Ok...Heres a few pics of the inside.

No it didn't have a bench seat. It had a yellow seat for the driver and back to back seat next to it.

Yes I'm sure it's paint peeling. So if I want, I can strip off the peeling paint then just prime and paint?? What kind of primer and paint?? Marine grade of some sort I'm sure.

There are all kinds of screws and bolts going through the bolt in different areas The ones I decided to remove, should the resulting hole be plugged with epoxy of some sort.

The wood on the transom looks/feels fine. The are a few areas where the wood is exposed and should be repainted.

Regarding the control parts, the all seem to work except the one cable. I'd rather fix that then control the boat from the steering wheel. And what am I going to want to change in the future, the size of the motor?? Someone else mentioned a 15hp. The boat is 12' long...and i really have no idea what would be too big or too small a motor for it.

The gas lines look good. No cracks and not brittle.

Planning right now on doing/changing the following to the engine. Checking/changing oil in lower part
Replacing Impeller
Replacing plugs, points, plug wires.

What am I missing????

Thanks again...Bill

Nice to see someone from the local area on iboats. Great little project I would like to ask did you get the papers for it. If not you would need to call the Oregon State Marine board and give them the hull # and they will send you transfer of title paper work. Then you would need to ether find the owner and have them sign off or send a copy of the paper work through certified mail to the last registered owner.

If it were me I would change the gas lines anyway. They're cheap enough to replace and you may as well do it now while you are at it. Plus, mine looked OK too on my old motor…until I tried to pull one off to remove the carb and the line broke in two.

Re: My Yardsale Boat

Is there a part missing off this pic where the cable hooks to the engine. Looking at different parts list and catalogs online, no where does it show the parts with the handle and mechanism to lift the engine. What is that called? Was it a accessory?

Re: My Yardsale Boat

A lack of title here means a trip with the boat and any papers you do have to the Marine Police, which is a division of the state police, if a hull ID number check comes up clean they issue you a new hull ID number and you then go to the local state Div. of Motor Vehicle office and get a title in your name. It take a few weeks or so but I've done a few like that. Most were abandoned boats.
It could get tricky with the last owner being deceased though, if they were the last title holder. It depends if the boat was part of a legal estate when the owner died. (IE: Former relatives may have claim to the boat as inheritance, and/or it may have been sold without the consent of the next of kin or proper recipient).

If it's been sitting and unregistered for many years, it may very well be off the records by now.

Most states have different laws as to boats lacking a title. You may also find that there never was a title for that boat and you will be the first to have one issued. In NJ, boats under 12' do not have titles. I believe that there are a few states that do not title boats at all, and a few that do not title a boat until a motor is mounted on it.
