Took boat out for the first time since I bought it. Only have a 6 gal. tank for now. Motored about 12 miles and went through 5.75 gal. of gas.

This seems way to dam much fuel usage. or do I need one heck of a tune up?

A 125 will use about 12.5 gallons an hour at WOT.Generally speaking running at planing speed at 2/3 to 3/4 throttle will produce the best MPG.But still probably 7 or 8 GPH.
The Force is not known to have very good mileage.

Most boats only get 2-3 mpg, regardless of engine make. More throttle=less mpg !!!

Optimize your setup. Be sure the motor is well tuned,be sure the anti vent plate is at least about even with the bottom of the boat.Be sure the prop is in excellent shape and the right pitch for your boating needs and max rpm rating.Something like smart tabs will help the boat plane easier and stay on plane at lower throttle settings.
Motor will still be using about 12.5 gallons at wot but the boat will respond better at lower throttle settings thus saving a little on gas.

A displacement hull driven by a small deisel is capable of 20 to 30 mpg but at
displacement speeds of 6 to 8 mph.

That's about right on average I would think. My bayliner capri 17 foot in chop uses 8 gallons to go an average of 18 to 23 miles. Smooth water will double how far I can go.

I have a Chrysler 55 1976 vintage and I took her out first time this week and got the same mpg as you... 12 miles 5 1/2 gallons of fuel...I am looking for a 20 gallon tank now....
