1974 6HP Evinrude 2 cycle LOTS OF SMOKE??!!

hey fellas!
may seem like a stupid question but i got a 2 stroke 1974 Evinrude 6HP and it smokes a lot.

I ensured the mixture wasn' too rich. Would I be assuming correctly to think this is pretty normal for that Outboard. Should i adjust the mixture knob on the Outboard to richer or leaner? It runs great but was a little concerned before i take her out.

I have heard other peopel saying use synthitec oil for the gas mixter, make sure its for two strokes. they say that cuts down on the smoke. can't smoke in the bars and nobody likes a smoker on the lake.

yeah i agree! i definitely dont wanna be the guy everyone points at and laughs. but thanks...ill look into the synthetic oil. makes sense.

LOL!!! My spelling can be aweful too!!! My motor smokes quite a bite but thats my fault... The guy that used to take me boating when I was lil swoar that a lil more oil is better. So instead of mix 50/1 I do a lil more... is there a real benifit besides 'The James Bond smoke screen'??? My motor smokes quite a bit upon start up... is that carbon build up???

Smoke comes from burning oil. You put oil in the gas. When you startup the motor, the gas/air mixture is rich from choking and just the fact that it puddles in the crankcase. Rich gas/air mixture means more oil in there. More oil in there means more oil to burn. Are you getting the picture?

Once running, there is a constant flow of oil going through the cylinders with the gas. Some of that oil burns (smoke), and some goes out the exhaust (into the water).

Smoke and oil are just facts of life on any two stroke and carbon has nothing to do with that.

Thanks F.R. !!! Ur opinion is always valued!!! Is putting a lil more oil in the gas [like 44/1 verses 50/1] is that a waste??? Will it increase the longevity of my motor??? I do alot of trolling... very rarely am I WOT for very long... even then I back it off to 3/4 to 7/8 throttle because I feel it's better for my motor...

Well it won't hurt. But not necessary either. Matter of fact, unless you run the tank slap dry you can't get 6 gallons and a pint of oil in there anyway. I usually dump in a pint of oil and fill it up with whatever it takes. Sometimes 5, sometimes whatever.

I've been reading a lot on these motors lately (I have a 1975 6HP) and one book (cheap outboard by Max Wawrzyniak) said to mix to 40 to one for a 50 to one motor prior to the mid seventies. He claimed there were some "Bronze bushings" somethings instead of roller bearings in these motors. I guess the real question is when were these motors made all roller bearings?
