Bad or weak coils?

OK, I really opened my 1977 70 HP Evinrude up for a good 30 min at WOT this last weekend. It was running great for 30 min than all of a sudden it bogged down at WOT and would not run anywhere past half throttle. When I would give it gas it would just bog down, let off the gas and it would start to slowly pick up again.

No more than half throttle was the tell tale sign for me of a coil pack going bad forcing the motor to only run on 1 or 2 cylinders instead of all 3. I have yet to check at home here however, does this sound like a coil related issue? I know coils are sensitive to heat so I assumed while going WOT for that long they must of heat up a little which caused one or two to fail...

It was getting fuel and was not overheating. Another thing is, I cant get a match for the 1977 coil packs here on Iboats.com. It seem like they skipped 1977-78.

Any thoughts?

Of course it is possible that it could be a coil, however you said "let off the gas and it would start to slowly pick up again". The word "slowly" sort of indicates that it is running out of gas, and the offending carb slowly regains enough fuel to start operating again. Ignition related cutting in and out generally happens suddenly. Just a guess based on the words you used.

Any thought on replacement coils for 1977 70 HP Rude? I cant find them for 1977 here on Iboats...
