1986 xr2 150 loads up at slow speeds..

My engine ildles well and runs fine at speeds above the plaining speeds, however when cruising around the engines starts too load up and smoke a fair amount of oil. If i gun it its fine at speeds after planing and even ok for a minute or two after i bring it back to cruising speeds and then it starts to load up and smoke it sounds like its missing little as well. Any help before i bring in the dealer and get ripped off. Thanks....

I'd try tuning it up a bit first.

Be sure your compression is even. I suspect it is fine.

Get the book and do a formal link n sync. That makes sure the timing and throttle operations are what is expected.

Just picture this. The throttle valves get a little out of sync, and one is stuck slightly open. It idles fast. Mr. Toobusy Mechanic sets the idle adjustment down to compensate. Now the timing is slow, and it's gassed unevenly.

Happens all the time. Quick guess adjustment instead of checking it out thoroughly and fixing it right eventually trashes the motor, or at least the owner's attitude about it.

If everything is as it should be, then when it's "loading up" just bump the "choke" (enricher). If it speeds up, you need fatter idle jets (smaller,they are air jets), and if it dies, you need leaner idle jets.

I think that engine has an idle stabilizer module on it, also. It could be acting up. Checkout is in the book.

Checkout the fuelpump diaghram. If it has a hole, raw fuel will leak into the crankcase, causing the symptoms you describe.

Thanks Guys I will see if a rookie (me) can resolve the problem this weekend, If not its going to the dealer.
I cant beleive all the wires and hardware under the hood of this beast compared to my last boat that had a 1986 johnson 110 hp.
