Questions about seals on lower gear case.

I have just been reading a thread about changing lower gear grease and noticed that they mentioned having seals around the upper and lower plugs. I have a 1983 Johnson 175 and when I drained the grease neither of my plugs had a washer or rubber ring between the screw and the gear case. Am I supposed to have one or the other on the screw? Also, I changed the grease because it had water in there and I put new grease in there and took it to the lake. When I got home I unscrewed the lower plug just a bit and there was a small amount of clear water that came out. Does this mean that I need the lower unit resealed or could it be coming from not having seals on those screws?

Re: Questions about seals on lower gear case.

Who ever seviced the lower unit before urself prolly noticed the seals were shot and never replaced them. Those seals are very cheap and also very important. Order urself 10 - 12 of them... drain ur oil again and utilize the seals with fresh oil... change them everytime u service lower unit. Info. I learned here on Iboats!!!

That's bang on. I would never run my LU without the seals around the screws... I buy lots whenever I get them.

Re: Questions about seals on lower gear case.

very often people who do some maintenance themselves look at it like oh a rbber seal it still looks ok why go to the rtore and get a 80cent seal.

well a 80 cent seal can make a 1000 dollar problem.

always put a new one on.
and i always lube them a bit befor installing them and make them tight.
