24V systems have more thrust nowadays but the biggest advantage is the batteries last longer during a fishing trip.

They say that's true. That two identical batteries in parallel on a 12v TM won't last as long as two in series on a same-thrust 24v TM. I don't know why, I'd think it'd be equal.

Don't think 12V or 24V. Think about what you need for thrust. Some 12V motors from MinnKota and MotorGuide use Maximizer circuitry (MinnKota terminology) that results in the very good run time from a single battery. Those units are available up to 55# of thrust. Anything over that will be 24V so the decision about 12V or 24V is all about thrust. If you don't need over 55#, think 12V or two 12V batteries in parallel. That will easily provide very hard all day use. I run a 55# MinnKota PD with a large deep cycle battery and have never run out of power. I fish hard with a break at noon then back on the water. If your boat needs more than 55# it 24V time.
