My brother has a S-10 thats around a 98-99 model. About 2 months ago it wouldn't start one day. He checked everything he could and finally gave up and took it to a shop after he put fuel pump and several sensors on it. The shop "fixed" it saying he had a short but never showed him where it was at. About 2 weeks ago it started again. It'll spin over and fire off for a split second them dies. Several people have told him that its the factory alarm messing it up and to reset the computor. He's disconnected the battery, done the key on/off thing, etc. Any other guess'es? I was a wrench in my younger days but to be honest I'm perplexed, its got me beat.

You need to check for fire and fuel. Pull a plug wire and check for spark. If you have spark get a spray bomb of carb cleaner, remove the air cleaner and spray some into the throttle, see if it will start on the carb cleaner. If it does it's a fuel (lack of) problem.

Check codes ,no codes >>>alarm ground, check by coil or possible module or crank sensor trouble

Re: S-10 help

Like stated above, I had a bad crankshaft position sensor give me similar symptoms. I didn't know it was bad until I got an error code.

2 Things you want to check for is fuel and spark. Also if the engine light has came on it is best to take it to the shop and have them retreive the codes from the computor this may help. A crank position sensor is another posibility. but if you are missing either fuel or spark then you should focus your diagnosis there. Good luck.

I got ya guys, it has fuel and spark, otherwise it wouldn't fire at all. I think I'm gonna do like RP says, we used to fire 'em off in the wrecking yards with wd40. They would run till the can ran out.

My initial guess is that it has an interconnected oil pressure gauge and will not continue to send fuel if it doesn't reach a certain oil pressure.

All GM's run with relay >>>relay dies it runs off oil pressure switch INTERCONNECTED your right Crank sensor can cause intermet spark with no codes plus mod the same

Re: S-10 help

Well I might have fixed it for him today. I went to help him get it on a trailer to take to the shop and he was messing around trying to crank it. I checked all of the fuses and relays and I could hear the fuel pump kick on at start and pressurize the lines. He pushed the schrader valve on the rail and he got fuel to squirt out. I thought I saw water drpolets so I looked a little closer, yep, water. His tank is in the bed since we bagged it so pulling the pump was easy. 5 minutes later I was looking at about 4 gallons of gas and and 6 gallons of water.......... I'll be building him an aluminum cover he neaten it up and hopefully this is what was wrong. It sure as heck wasn't what was right! I attatched some pics so you'll see why the tank has to go in the bed. Kinda stupid to me becasue I work a truck instead of drive one but its what he wanted so I did it for him.

It had a roll pan. He ripped off two of them and got tired of replacing them. Right now he's got the stock bumper (albeit painted and flamed) back on so he can use a trailer ball on the bottom as a drag block. He used to just lay frame till he scraped/ground through a trailing arm........
The door handles are shaved now, he plans on the mirrors too but I'm trying to talk him out of it.

Kinda like the lollipop question, the world will never know.

IMHO it stems from the fact that the top of the sending unit/pickup tube/fuel pump assembly is open to the top of the world. Thats what the cover will be for.

See above for first comment.

Naw, that suspension is like a cadillac now. Those airbags ride like a dream. I've got about 25 hours myself in that project, almost a full 8 burning rods.

So far its still not running. I honestly think the bassturd is too damn lazy to do it right to fix it. My dad who was a mechanic has been trying to help him out but the brother just won't listen. I wrenched for several years myself and ain't too dumb although I am a little rusty. If he pulls the same bs with me he'll be walking before I fix it for him. I'm go go over tommorrow and get it going, provided he acts ok.

I wouldn't do the mirrors. Mainly because its illegal not to have a drivers side mirror in Wisconsin as well as a rear view, but it may be different in Texas. Just put some different after market mirrors on it IMO.
