Hey all I have a 1987 VIP Vision with a 2.3L Ford OMC (Tempo motor)

Well I was out boating one day and it started to run like crap and got worse and worse. When it does run it runs really rough. Like its missing a cylinder. It bogs out when you try to idle it, even when you give it gas. But I replaced the plugs and checked them again and they are all firing. Now its been 3 weeks and I still cant figure it out. First thing I did was change the spark plugs. The points are fine. I put a new Condensor coil on it. The carb was rebuilt last year. I drained all the gas out and put in fresh gas, didnt help.

The plug wires look new but thats going to be the next thing I try.
Please if anyone can help me that would be most appreciated. We're having a great summer and the boat has been sitting in the dock for 3 weeks now.

Any suggestions, any at all would be very helpful. Thanks!

Have you replaced any fuel filters?

Coil?

Gap and clean the points?

Check timing?

Start with checking your points gap. I had the exact same problem with my boat. Put new points on but did not set gap appropriately (stupid aftermarket service manual misled me) and it ran like dookie. Spit, sputter, just horrible. Found out correct gap and bingo!! Problem solved.

Hey guys thanks a lot for the quick replies

Well come to find out the mechanic that had it for a few weeks told me he put new points in but I took the distributor apart today and they arent new, they just need to be gapped correctly, just waiting for my buddy and his feeler gauges. I took out the point assembly and gave them a good cleaning so once the gap is set I think we'll be good to go. The guy that was working on it gapped them correctly and it ran good for about 20 mins then the same problem. He gapped them again and once again, resorted back to running like poop. Maybe he isnt tightening the screw enough cuz they keep coming loose. Its a beautiful summer and I just want to be out drinking and wakeboarding!! haha

Im almost certain its the point gaps.

But my second guess would be timing.

You guys are a lot of help, just having 2 other people mention point gaps is enough to convice me, check in on this thread when I reply again and I'll let you know how it runs!

Don't clean points; replace them.

point are cheap, replace them, go to napa and get a tune-up kit for your 2.3 motor..

If you have access to an inductive timing light, dwell meter and vacuum gauge you can isolate without tearing anything down.

The inductive light can be used not only for timing, but also checking if there's voltage thru your plug wires.

Dwell meter is more accurate then feeler gauge but also lets you know what the points are doing while the motor is running. Dwell should be steady with no flucuations.

Vacuum gauge can cover everything from timing to carb adjustment to valves to a vacuum leak.

Points are cheap and a bad condenser can mess you over.
