I recently purchased a 1969 55 hp Johnson with electric shift. I got it home and started it and realized it would only go in forward gear. After reading the answers on your forum I did it all. I drained the oil, checked voltage to the lower gear housing wiring, all tests were positive. I still only had forward gear. I pulled the leg and pulled the solenoids I noticed small pin at the end of the rod was laying on top of the hydraulic pump. I re-attached it to the solenoid rod installed it put the leg back on and YAHOO I had forward, reverse and neutral!!! Life was good again!! I though I would run the engine for 15 minutes before heading for the lake. Just before shutting it off I thought I?d better shift it again. It went into reverse, neutral, forward, when I went back to neutral it was locked in forward. Once again I removed the leg to check to selenoid shifting rod everything was fine. I put the leg back on and during instillation I noticed the prop would turn in both directions (should be locked in forward right?). I then thought I had to pull the bottom gears. In doing so I noticed the clutch dog forward ears were rounded slightly everything else looked fine. I washed all the parts in varsal coated it with type C omc oil. I decided to remove the clutch dog and reversed it. The reverse dogs were in a one shape. I reassembled the bottom gear case and still I can turn the prop shaft in both directions. If ANYBODY has any answers I would really appreciate some help before I loose what little hair I have left. Thanks very much Gary

Stuck in neutral generally means the piston is stuck in the oil pump bore. It is a very close fit, so any grit or grindings at all will stick it. There is a screen to keep chips out, but the very fine stuff gets through the screen, and that is the kind of stuff that makes it stick.

Well you were 100% right. I had a hard time pulling the piston out. I found a little peice of aluminum that came off the housing (by removing the snap ring the hard way needle nose pliers). I also found a small round tab? It is a small peice that has broke from the rear of the pump housing under the piston, it looks to me that the piston rest on this tab. My question is can I run the pump with this small tab missing or do I need to buy a new pump? I thought maybe I could JB weld it back on since it was just a rest for the piston. I believe the screen screw is tapped just behind this tab. One more thing can emmery paper the piston? Thanks again Gary
