This is a stupid question but I'd rather know then just assume.
obviously OUTBOARD is a motor that attachs to the transom and can be easily removed.

My stupid question/questions of the week is:
Does inboard/outboard refer more to the boat and it's ability to be fitted with either motor (inboard or outboard)?
If this is the case then I would assume that STERN DRIVE refers to the boats ability to accept inboard only.
Am I even close or way off on these assumptions?

You got it on OUTBOARD, fitr.

I/O means inboard/outdrive, not inboard/outboard. It is the same thing as sterndrive.

I/O means inboard/outdrive,
hum, ya learn something new everyday i guess. i didn't know that. i really thought it ment inboard/outboard since it was initially a idea of combineing an inboard for the bigger hp to an outboard lower only......sterndrive appers to be the name of the invention. or read this. even found this artical here on iboats.....
