I am considering buying a 16- 19 ft center console(boston whaler-carolina skiff). Is it worth the difference to buy a 2 or 4 stroke?

Etec or 4 stroke is going to be worth the extra money over a new carbed 2 stroke. Between the Etec and 4 stroke go with what ever one is cheaper in your HP range.

Re: 4 stroke versus 2 stroke

I have heard a lot of complaints about the performance of the 4 strokes on some hull designs, it seems the extra weight of the 4 stroke motors tends to but the bow up and stern down.

you will have to find someone with the specific hull/engine combo to know how well a boat will perform with the heavier 4 stroke.

some hulls may be specifically designed for 4 stroke motors.

I have heard that the new yamaha 4 strokes are much lighter.

some small boats like a 14 carolina skiff need a 20% bigger 4 stroke just to get on plane.

plan on installing trim tabs on any boat with a 4 stroke.

having said that the 4 strokes are wonderfully quiet and get better gas milage.

4 strokes may be more expensive to repair as they are more complicated and there are more parts.

I wonder if the OP bought a boat and motor yet?
