if you put a NEW prop on, it sounds like you hurt the clutch dog in the lower unit. or did you put a used prop on?

How'd you checked the prop? There is absolutely no way you can look at a prop and tell if it's spun or not. Sometimes if it's spun it's obvious, but sometimes it looks just like it did when new.

Check it to see if it is spun by marking across the face and bolt with an awl or a laundry pen.

If the mark shifts when you feel the slip, the prop is spun.

If it is spun, you need special tools to repair and even large dealers will usually refer you to a prop shop.

I like to use the cotter pin as a pointer:

Re: Wont stay in gear?

Is it actually coming out of gear (the shift lever on the motor)? Does it make any grinding noises when it does? Does it slam and bang around if it goes back into gear? Coming out of gear or clutch dog problems are violent acts. Yes, it takes special tools to do it right. Parts are very expensive, depending on what damage is done.

It comes out of gear very rapidly, the shift lever stays put and the motor reveses very high. It banged when it first happened now it just pops out. Thanks

As FR says, you are in for a new clutch dog and forward gear, plus labor. If you haven't done this repair before, I would suggest a good shop do it and it will cost ~ 600 to $800 to fix. The moral is: don't hit rocks.
