I replaced lower unit water pump on a alpha 1 mercruiser 5.7L engine, had in forward gear on shifter. Now it stays in forward gear. Would like to have some insight on what is wrong. Thanks to all for help.

You had it in forward gear on the shifter, but did you have the drive in forward also, did you make sure it stayed in forward.
Raise the drive and see if the shift shafts are in place. If they are, pull the drive back off. The shift slide may have dropped out of the roller.

It Sounds like the Shifter was in Forward,+ the Outdrive Wasn't.............

Welcome to iboats........:)
Pull the drive back off.....
See if your shifter moves freely......
While in foreward your coupler should be in the same position as in this pic:
http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6A2R3.PDF

In reverse it should be at 45* or so, as long as it does rotate you should be ok......
Before removing the drive, note the shaft & above pictured item.....
They must be engaged, if not I suspect that you have left out the washer that sits over the shift shaft & props up the intermediate shift shaft to prevent up & down play.....
If this is the case you will need to pull the cases apart & put it back on.....
Turn the prop ccw & the shaft CW to lock it into gear & maintain pressure to insure it stays in gear for assembly......;)

Pulled lower unit off, still jumps out of shift cut off and it is hard to shift without lower unit on. Thanks for any insight.

Lower unit, Maybe I did not word it right, sorry. with the lower unit off the remote shift is hard to move, If I take the lower shift cable off it shifts fine. It seems like the cable is frozen. Thanks for all insight.

That would be the first thing I would check after pulling the outdrive off the boat.
