Ever since the outboard was new I had always believed it to be an 1957. I went with my dad to get the boat and trailer as a package in October of 1957. He always referred it as a 1957. The reciept does not indicate the model year. The dealer's decal is still intact under the clamshell hood. Its an Evinrude "Bigtwin" 35 Electric Start S/N 25936-05581. A neighbor told me recently it is a '58 or '59.

It is still equipped with the pressurized fuel system. I removed the tops of the the two tanks yesterday and aside from some minor light easily removed surface rust in the tanks the fuel system seems in good condition. The diaphram in the pressure pump in the tank top is still strong and flexible. There is some aluminum corrosion that can be removed with a light wire brush and carb dip. I would like to clean everything and reassemble it and keep the pressurized fuel system. I have new o rings for the connectors and plenty of dual hose. Because of its age, I have been advised to convert to a pump system. What does that require to convert.

The motor was last run in 1997 without problems and has been stored inside since. I plan to put in a new water pump, replace all fuel lines, remove the flywheel and replace the coils and points. Anything else? I did a compression check yesterday and it is 140 in each cylinder.

Howdy, Trackbolt.

Your engine was manufactured in 1957, but it is a 1958 model.

The pressure tank system works fine as long as it is well maintained. . .zero air leaks, but the fuel pump system is a lot easier to maintain. If your system integrity is good I would stick with it.

i have the same engine, just redid it. i did convert to the fuel pump. only because i wanted multiple tanks, for long runs. i am old school and don't believe in changing something that has proven to work for 50 years. i did the carb kit, points, condensers, coils, plug wires, impeller, all for around $150-170 from laingsoutboards.com. order eveything at once and shipping is usually $5.00

if you coils look like this there toast. to pull the flywheel you need #8 x 1/4x 20 hardened bolts, standard bolts will pull out of the flywheel. thread them in 7/16 of an inch, no more no less.

Re: Year by S/N and fuel system questions

I have two six gallon tanks. One is an Evinrude CruisAday and the other a Johnson Milemaster. Both of these tanks have usually given us enough range for fishing on the Chesapeake Bay or Patuxent River in MD. It was rare that we went through both tanks. I remember once in the early 80's I brought along a five gallon plastic jerry can just in case. It was only in the way. The Johnson tank is in rougher shape than the Evinrude tank but both only need a good cleaning and tank gaskets. It is unfortunate that the tanks had been allowed to deterioriate as the got left outside unprotected for about year after the boat and motor were taken OOS. My plan is to clean everything, replace the gaskets, paint and re-decal them with restoration decals. Unless one or both of the tanks fail after being refurbished I will plan to stay with the pressurized system.

good move, laingsoutboards.com has all the essentials. on the tank refurbishing be aware there are 2 types, one has the black plastic pump button, the other has the silver metal pump button. they require different kits for the rebuild.

Thanks for the help. I have both types. The Johnson tank has the tall metal button and the Evinrude tank has the low black button. I'll post some picutres as I go along.
