Alpha one question

I found this thread while researching my problem with my 1989 alpha one. I am new to boating and know very little about the i/o but i do have a bit of automotive experiance. To my problem, this weekend my boat developed a, and i apologize for the vague description, thud that you could hear and feel anywhere in the boat. We think we traced it back to the lower unit. The thud did not seem to keep pace with the rpms but the did increase in speed when the boat did, but again not in timing with the rpms. No vibrations or anything like that just a dull thud we could hear and feel. At the same time we noticed that when in reverse the boat did not respond as it did in the past. We could throttle up in reverse and not go backwards very fast at all. Is sounded like something was grinding and or slipping like when either gears or teeth are wearing out. We beached the boat and checked out the prop. We could turn the prop one way with a ratcheting type sound and feel to it, but we couldn't turn it the other way for the most part, in forward for every 15-20 clicks and positive stops, it would slip and go backwards, but in reverse we nevergot it to slip backwards. So thanks to my research i was wondering if this sounded like something to do with the reverse gear, or the clutch dog, or something completely different. As i said i am new to this so if i left out any crucial information the would help you to help me diagnos this problem, please feel free to ask and i will answer it to the best of my ability. Thanks in advance for any help you can give

Here is a manual for your drive & how to remove/reinstall it....
Move the cursor over the lettered sections on page seven & click on the section that you want to view......
Make sure the shifter is in foreward for removal......
Welcome to iboats, btw.......:)

Re: Alpha one question

Sounds like it's not going all the way into gear and popping out of and back into gear. Probably the lower shift cable has worn out. They don't suddenly go out of adjustment after working fine for a long time.
I would sure get it fixed soon. After a few times of that, the shift dogs round over and no amount of cable replacement or adjustment will repair the gears in the drive.

Re: Alpha one question

Thank you both for your response. I think i will try the adjustment first and see if that helps, but a friend of mine has some knowlege of outboard motors, and he thought maybe the gear dogs as he called them (apparently that is what they are called on an outboard, if we are talking about the same thing?)were already bad when he heard it this weekend. Not sure though, so i will try the adjustment. Next question, if it were the shift dogs, would there be any shavings or anything like that that could hurt the whole drive, or could they be replaced and be good? As far as the gimbal bearing, as we were dinking around with things, we could grab ahold of the housing and lift it upwards and it would move and clunk but the bolts didn't seem to be loose. Is there supposed to be some slop there or is this the result of a bad gimbal bearing, and would that be the cause of the light thud i was hearing and feeling, maybe due to cavitation forcing it up occassionally and clunking? Also based on the two varying responses, do you guys think i am dealing with two different problems, or am i looking at one big problem?

Thanks again for the responses, and any future help you can offer

Re: Alpha one question

Do you need any special tools to pull the drive off, or is it pretty standard until you get to the internal componants? thanks again

Re: Alpha one question

Nothing special to pull drive. See the manual posted above. As far as internal drive work, too many special tools, etc for me.
