Considering a Key West 1720 CC. Which motor would be a better choice for this size boat. A 90 HP 2 stroke or a 90 HP 4 stroke?

Re: Which engine on a 1720 CC?

I was just in Ocala, FL looking at the 1720 CC (sportsman), and after talking with several people decided that I would likely get the 2-stroke 90HP rather than the four-stroke. The gas savings on the 4-stroke likely wouldn't be that much and I was told that the 2-stroke has more power to hop up onto a plane quickly. That said, I haven't driven either yet.

With my 186 CC 115yamaha 4 stroke It lags some on hole shot. If you can afford the maximum hp 4 stroke motor allowed I would go with that. 4-strokes have a harder time getting up on plane. If not go with a 2 stroke faster on plane. I get almost 5 miles to the gallon with my setup.

I have twin 150 Mariner two strokes and I get on average about 2 miles per gallon. At $3/gal, I don't really care that much about my hole shot. Go with the 4 stroke. It is quieter and more efficient.

Have a 186 cc with an 150 four stroke ,love it but I can tell the weight on the back of my boat. With your size boat I would go with the two stroke motor.

I have a 1720 Pro with a 90 2-stroke.. It runs 35-40 MPH... I like the 2 stroke b/c it's lighter and more efficient... a little more work in the break-in period, but it's quicker to plane

I push my '94 Sportsman 1720CC with a 2-stroke Yamaha 115...It's definitely more power than it needs...If I ever need a new motor, I'll probably go with another 2-stroke with less horsepower...

The 4 stroke is gonna put the transom one inch above the waterline, the most common complaint with the smaller KW boats. Go with the 2 stroke.
