Hello, I'm new to the board and had a quick question.

What is different between the 180 HP carbed 5.0 and the 220 carbed 5.0. I'm assuming the higher HP #'s (250+) are the EFI and the MPI versions of the engine. any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't remember the 5.0 as much as the 5.7, but I'll try:

Standard head 2brl: 190HP
Standard head 4brl: 205HP
Vortec head 2brl: 220HP
Vortec head MPI: 260HP?

I think the 5.0 was all vortec heads at engine model year '98, like the 5.7.

Imported John states that the vortec head 2bbl 5.0 is rated at 220 hp. I'm not doubting his info, but how can I tell if it is a vortec head vs older style? I have a 2000 Bayliner with the 5.0/2bbl that according to the specs is supposed to be 220hp. Nice runner and very easy on fuel vs my buddys 5.7/4bbl thats horrible$$$ on fuel. Is there a id# in the serial that indicates HP?

If your engine was never swapped out, it should be vortec. To verify, count the intake manifold to cyl head mounting bolts. A vortec will have 4 per side (8) and standard head 6 per side (12).

You will see less fuel consumption with this motor, because although it is built like a 350, it has smaller pistons. I had a 79' SeaRay 20' bowrider with the early version (non vortec) 305cu in motor rated at 228hp with a four bbl carb.

There is no HP tag, if it is a 2000 2bbl, then it is 220 hp. Also, the difference in real world fuel consumption between the 5.0 and the 5.7 is minimal(if everything else is the same). Your comparison to your buddy's boat has way to many variables.

Different boats - different hull design, weight, weight distribution, gear ratio, prop and more importantly, different driver.

Mercruiser Service Manual #17, Book 1, Chap 1, Page 1B-7

MCM 5.0L Alpha 2brl carb: 190HP, 141KW

MCM 5.0LX Alpha 4brl carb: 205HP, 152KW

Propshaft rating: Power rated in accordance with National Marine Mfg Assoc rating procedures

This is for standard head version, which was used upto around 1997.

Look at current HP ratings on Merc's website for vortec ratings. I just checked and they are what I had stated earlier.

MikDee is stating HP ratings from when mfgs rated at the crank. Depending on drive on the amount of loss, but it is always less.
