Making side storage box?

I recently replaced the plywood floor in my 14ft lund. The layout of the boat is a bench in front, a bench in the middle (two small storage areas mounted to the side with a small walkway in the middle) and a bench in the back. The problem is when i went to take the floor out the middle storage was riveted to the side of the boat and screwed to the plywood floor. So I opted to leave the rivets and angle grind the compartment/bench out . Now since they are out I am planning on making side storage along the side of the boat from bench to bench. My idea is using slotted angled steel and bolt it to the floor and then bolting 1/2 in carpeted plywood to that. Same thing with the top. Along the boat top I was gonna use square aluminum tubing bent to the shape of the boat. I am hoping to use piano hinge to make the lid. I know its not easy to picture without seeing it but before i do this does anyone have any input or ideas before i start this? Also i am worried about the piano hinge being strong enough.46in long compartment with a lid at least 35in long? All i see at the hardware store is flimsy piano hinge not like the stuff you see in factory installations? I would assume it would get some foot traffic getting in and out of the boat...Light weight and cheap is also a goal:)

what i did with these is, 1x2 screwed to floor, 3/4 aluminum angle attached to side of boat, screwed plywood side to 1x2 on floor, and ran a 1x2 frame around the inside of the box. i use an aluminum 1/2 inch J channel, and just fitted the tops, with a block of wood in front. no hinge. back slips into J channel, and wood block in front keeps them in place. if you use piano hinge use a full length one, the whole distance of the top.
