I have a 2002 Yamaha 115 HP outboard. While I have ordered a manual for the engine, I've not yet received it and the boat had no operators manual. My question involves proper starting technique or procedure. When I start the motor cold (85 degree ambient) it seems to take a long time to catch. Once started and warmed up, it restarts flawlessly with just a flick of the key. I'm convinced when starting cold, I'm just not doing it properly. Once in the water and the motor lowered, my process is as follows:
It takes a long time and as I said, once started it runs perfectly. Am I not doing it correctly? Any advice would be great.
- Pump the gas line bulb until is feels resonably solid
- Turn the key and press it once momentarily (which I believe is the "choke")
- Turn the key to ingage the starter
- raise the throttle and hope it kicks in
