So... I dropped my boat off at the mechanics place and was waiting to get the phone call about what it needed. Well, they actually got to it early and started working on it and called me today. This is basically what they said: The rebuilt the carb... cool. They changed the oil.... cool. The fixed one of my lights... cool. they got it running.... cool. They noticed water in one of the cylinders... coo... err.... not cool. Actually... $#!+!!!!!! So... now I'm waiting to hear back on wether or not its a head or manifold, or.... the dreaded cracked block. So... it could be a few hundred more... or... $3800 for a rebiult motor.

I knew that when I bought the boat, it was a gamble, but since I heard it run, I figured the engine would be ok and I was thinking that most of the gamble would be on the outdrive. Oh well... what can ya do? I'm thinking I'll just fix it and run it for a season and decide later. If I dont fix it... I wont get back what I've got into it. Oh well... thats the cost of boating huh?

Manifold leaks are common, so keep your fingers crossed.

ok.. so I went to Jasper's website and filled out as much info as I could and got a price of $2480 and thats with a core as an exchange. So... whats the price without the core (if mine is cracked, I'm sure they won't take it), then figure installation, and I'm pretty close to the $3800 again.. no?

Looking at our wish list and price for a new motor...maybe you should part it out and get another one that has what you want? Good grief? $3800 for just a long block installed?? Is your boat worth that much? Find another used boat with your engine or a comparable replacement and buy it. Part out what you don't need or want. Get involved and learn the rebuild process making sure its built with good parts and the right way. Rent or buy a cherry picker and install it yourself. it's not that hard. Then when it breaks...again....it's 30 years old......you will know how to fix it yourself. Free boat education, Sweet boat you understand, cheaper than $4000.00, Priceless!

Anyway...Jasper is proud of their engines so that would be the high end in my opinion.

Good luck!

Why jump the gun... with water in the cylinders it's probably a manifold.

well... Murphy reigns supreme! lol!!! Yeah... its the worst case scenario. Block is hosed. Need a new one... yadda yadda. Good news though! I just saved a bunch of money by switchi... jk. the good news is that I get a 2 year warranty! Oh well... at least I'll have piece of mind with a new engine. and since I really like the hull, I'm willing to scrape some extra dough together for it. Thanks for all your advice and links guys.
