1988 alpha one outdrive has a leak from the small weep hole at the bottom. Any ideas? Also My exhaust shutters are shot. My father in law told me to just take them out( he has owned numerous mercruiser drive boats and did all maintenence and repairs himself). He said he ran one of his for 5-6 years with out any in it. I dont know enough to beleive him or not. I have priced them and they are not expensive. So im thinking of just putting them in and boating.

Most likely a shift shaft seal or a lower oil seal in the upper housing causing your leak. Exhaust shutters are an easy fix - do it.

Pull the drive, drain the gear lube and do a pressure check on the drive. With it off the boat, you can see inside to find where the leak is. About 15 psi and some soapy water will tell you where it's leaking.
Guessing where it might be is a waste of time.

Do you have a diagram of how to hook it up and pressure test it?
