Hi guys, got a problem with serial #'s on my 10hp Mercury. On the front of the motor the plate has Serial #3798268,but when I try to find tune up kit(points and condensors) it shows a stator assembly which my motor doee not have.My motor has points because I took the flywheel off to check.I have to go to serial#'s 1470349-1865778 to find points which looks just like my motor, only serial #s with points. Here's the kicker, that motor's carb and choke assembly is not like mine. You have to go to serial #'s2798057-3263262 to find my carb and choke assembly.I have found 2 other #'s on motor 941 2524 and 637 2756.The first # is on side of block and second # is on the front of block? Can anyone tell me what year this actually is,I was told it was a 74 from the tag on the front of cowl, but it definately isn't those serial #'s..Sorry so long, thanks for info. Chad

Re: Serial Numbers Don't Match

It's not hard to swap out a clamp bracket assembly, so the mismatch is certainly possible, and not all that uncommon.

That said, look closer at the powerhead for a stamped in number, not a cast in number. It'll be seven digits and fairly small typeset. That will be the serial number of the original motor...

You said you have points - are the coils under the flywheel or mounted on the rear of the recoil? If the coils are under the flywheel then you have a straight up magneto ignition, akin to the old Phelon mags. If the coils are external to the flywheel then you have the maker point ignition - a first generation CDI if you will. Mercury referred to it as the Lightning Energizer system. Worked well but can be VERY expensive to repair if the under-flywheel bits go bad...

Re: Serial Numbers Don't Match

I've seen the numbers stamped in alum plugs inserted into the block similar to what you'd have in an automobile block...referred to as freeze plugs, but about the size of a quarter and alum rather than galv-steel.

Re: Serial Numbers Don't Match

Thanks guys for the info. Here's what i found stamped on powerhead. Not sure of last 2 numbers, very faint.2514279.The coils are mounted under the flywheel.I'm thinking it a late 60'sor early 70's motor. Thanks chinewalker for the help. It's good little motor but I keep losing a cylinder every so often, especially at low idle.I'm thinking it's the points so I cleaned them which helped but still doing it,but not as often. The points are pretty worn.Again, thanks Chinewalker for the help, you too Texasmark. Me again. Just tried to find those #'s at Outboard Parts Catalog but it does not show them at all, they end at 1865778 and start back at 2798057. I may not be readind the #'s on powerhead right so I will check again tomorrow when I can see a little better,Thanks again

Re: Serial Numbers Don't Match

My book says it's a 1969 110 if the last numbers you give are correct.
By the first set of numbers, it says a 1974 110..if I'm not mistaken, this is an 11hp.
And, as chinewalker said, this could be a hybrid very easily...some years the parts were a bit too interchangeble....not a Bad thing until it comes time to find parts...Good Luck!
