I have a 1979 20hp mercury tiller. It slams into forward gear when started. Is the linkage adjustable? If so, how do I adjust?

Re: linkage

There is no linkage adjustment, the shift cam and possibly the shift pin in the lower unit are bad

Re: linkage

Try pumping the bulb if it stays running the fuel pump need to be repaired, if that don't work first try to open the idle adjust ment 1/2 turn and if that helps it needs the carb adjusted and if it don't you will need to clean the carb.
