First find out what year your motor is. I looked up the lever for a 1974 and it is available from any Johnson or Evinrude dealer, although pricey.

Go to the Antique Outboard Club's website, aomci.org and place a free want ad on their Webvertize pages for a used one.

Maybe. What year is your motor? Maybe I missed it. If its an old 1960's-70's model then check the lower crankcase seal while you have the powerhead off. Probably needs a new o-ring and cork washer. In fact, you might as well do the impeller too since you've got it apart. Its only an extra $20 or so and likely needs to be done anyway.

wbeaton is speaking of the cork gasket and o-ring that is part of the carbon seal assembly directly under the powerhead and keeps water out of the powerhead. It is a vital part and yes you should replace those two items. 303355 cork gasket and 303347 o-ring. You will see what we are talking about when you get in there.

I have the shift lever and P/N 313065, which is a gasket, and described to me as a powerhead gasket. The guy I bought the lever from suggested the gasket. Mine is a 1975.

I watch this thread a little, wanted to chime in but............... LOL I have been a welder for 26 years and have a lot of alum. welding, certified up to 2 inch alum.

Sorry but somehow I knew you would end up replaceing the handel, It could have been welded but as soon as you put the goo stuff you incresed the price of the welding because it is a cast part, lots of pores in cast, lot of impurities also. Now the welder would have itty bitty goo thingies explode when he strikes an arc.

I'am so glad you just got a new one and put it on. Luck to ya.

I kept posting as an education to others via the search feature. Thanks for being patient with me!

But it's not on yet.

It was a very good education thread. You will have no trouble replaceing it your self, too many people on this board willing to talk you through it. Very helpful people in here. The parts on iboats are very well priced and there shipping is fast as well. This is the first place I come to when looking for advice or parts.

With any cast stuff about the only way to get a working repair is to have it welded or replaced. You can fab. a piece to bolt or rivet but it will get loose in time and then your back to the begining. I dont think they can make any goo that will hold for long.
