I have a 1990 Evinrude 88 spl that?s not charging the battery. It doesn?t have a rectifier. Where does the charge come from? I changed the sator but my volt gauge is still at 11 or so volts and doesn?t change at higher rpms.

The 11 volts is the battery voltage. It has to have a rectifier or it is a generator system, even then it will need a regulator. Let me check.

EDIT: BRP Part #0582399 rectifier

Your motor has a regulator/rectifier (p/n 0582399), I believe, which explains why it's not charging. Your stator may have been fine. I suggest you look at the PL on BRP's website.

thanks for the info i changed the part the rectifier, and i thinks that did the trick. befor i had 12 volts or less with no change at higher rpm now i have 12.1 and about 12.6 at 3000 or higher rpms i hope im only suppose to get that and not any higher. thanks again

Re: 1990 88spl battery not charging

There is no voltage regulator on those models and 16 V is common, mine gets even higher sometimes, but thats normal. Reversing the battery cables kills the rectifier instantly. Look for bad grounds too, check every connection and the wires, it's not uncommon for a wire to break or corrode and only work intermittently, or at a lower voltage.
