Just a note here, yes your throttle linkage should move in synch. with the timing advance plate under the flywheel, the stop on the timing plate is full advance, it should not be fixed there (stuck?) it should move freely through it's range, and arrive there at WOT with the carbs full open. With the motor off, Remove your control box cables, and put the motor in forward gear to check the motion of your carb, and timing linkage.

thats what I was trying to say.sorry if it wasn't clear,look on that timong plate,there should be a hole that will accept (if missing)a plastic socket,then there would be a ball with a small bent linkage rod that would connect to the top of the throttle lever in same fashion,you may be missing some parts ,the momenum of the flywheel could have caused the advancing,

Well, after looking at this thing for an hour after dark last night scratching my head, I think I figured out the problems. First, there has been a ground wire attached to the block near the solenoid and not attached to anything else. I pulled out the Seloc and noticed it needed to be grounded to the solenoid (Specifically, it says Ground/Safety Switch)...go figure. So got that hooked up. Then started messing around with the throttle linkages and realized I had the sync all kinds of backwards. I ran the plastic piece out on the end of the throttle linkage and low and behold, the distributor timing plate thingy (LOL!! ) was all the back. Roll the throttle forward, and the things follows perfectly. So I am off to the river for a test session and to figure out where the boat is taking water. I'll be back with the results.

look at the spots where the boat rests on the rollers. these tend to wear thru on older boats. look for dripping water after you take the boat out of the water.

I crawled under the boat this morning. I will leave the plug in after I yank the boat from the water and look for dripping water. Thanks for the suggestion.

Well, back from the river. Not good. I was on the fourth crank and the thing just went dead. I disconnected the ground I hooked up this morning to the ground on the solenoid hoping that might fix things, and that didn't work. So back at the house am I with yet another dilema. Good grief, an older boat is like a new wife. Both have problems you didn't know about until after you made the committment!!!!
Ok, for the leaking, holy crap that thing fills with water quick. In the water for a half hour or so and dumps out about 3 gallons of water. I left the plug in the boat to see if I saw anything leaking and found water streaming down the transom at the motor mount. Evidently this isn't the first motor and the seal job probably wasn't very good. I am going to search for ignition in here to see if there is a way to trouble shoot a solenoid unless somebody has an idea for me.

Ok, so I found the solenoid is shot. Now while I am waiting for the arrival of a replacement, I am going to pull the motor and tinker with the hull. I am not liking what I am seeing.....a little bulging in the transom on the interior side just below the motor. Hoping not for an operation.

When I was an airdale, we called AT's "Tweetie birds". Of course, being an AQ at the time they called us "Queens". But, the tables have turned. AQ's have gone away and my rate was changed to, of all things, AT! I just can't get used to the idea of seeing ATCS after my name. BTW, my birds were A3 Sky Warriors, A6 Intruders, F4 Phantoms and F-14 Tomcats. Even the Tomcat is old stuff compared to your Hornet. My birdfarms were Midway, Kittyhawk & FDR. Thanks for taking the helm from us old salts.

I have worked for a few of you "Queens" before. LOL!! I have even worked for a couple of old AX's as well. Just like old tomcatters, the wank about everything new and compare it to the old days. I have sailed the Kitty Hawk, John C Stennis, Constellation, and the Carl Vinson. I still say there's no better carrier than a gas turbine carrier!! I have been a hornet baby my entire 13 years and have loved every minute of it. Can't wait to get back to sea duty. My wife's on sea duty now...an AO1 with VFA-2.
As always, I love hearing from those who paved the way...thank you for the honor of meeting another brother who sailed the seas.

LATEST UPDATE FROM THE NEWBIE!!
Okay all...here's what has happened since the last posting. I removed motor and mount to fix the holes in the transom. I am now finding waaaay less water when I pull the plug. Second, I installed the new solenoid and reversed the linkages for the timing advance and now the motor purrs like a kitten. I got everything back together yesterday and took the wife on our maiden voyage out here on the Kings River. It was a blast, although I have the idle RPMs a bit low I do believe. I don't have a tach yet, so that part will have to wait until I get one. The boat came with one from a Mercruiser, but I have no idea if it's compatible with the Evinrude. A big hearty THANK YOU to all of you who have helped me thus far. I will add a pic to my signature for all to see what we have created together. Thanks again...Chad.
