I am in the process of putting my 58 dad's Bigtwin back in service after several years. I am putting new coils, points and water pump before I get it going. I have my eye on a "running" Bigtwin 35 as a parts engine but I am getting the urge to rebuild it and retire my Dad's motor. My question is aside from the routine tune up parts, pump inmpellers and gaskets what is available for the 49 year old motor. Can pistons, rings, seals and stuff still be had? I have got the itch ot rebuild one. I have been rebuilding antique four cycle Gravely tractor engines for the last 30 years and now I'd like to do a twin cylinder water cooled job.

Thanks

You need to check compression on the motor you're thinking about rebuilding. If it's good, there's no reason to crack the case open. Just do what you need to restore it otherwise.

If you're wanting to rebuild just for the halibut, I'd pick a newer model because parts would be much easier to find. On a 49 year old motor, you might find all the parts but that last essential one and be stuck. Also, vintage parts ain't cheap.

One old iron collector to another, "Go for it" !!! Old outboards are like old tractors. You see one you must make it run !!! Gravely's are one of the best garden tractors made. Old Wheel Horse's & vintage Allis get my attention tho...lol.lol...
