I'm trying to reinstall the distributor on an '88 4.3 OMC....I marked a place on the distributor and intake and had it at TDC #1....when trying to drop it back it it keeps going to #6(next cylinder on cap)

What do i do to get it back to #1? I did move the engine slightly but put it back where it was exactly....

Thanks

Re: Distributor installation..

You will need to get a long screwdriver and turn the oil pump shaft a little. Watch how far the distributor turns as it drops, and align the oil pump shaft accordingly. (That's assuming you really do have things lined up for TDC #1).

Re: Distributor installation..

1. Locate No. 1 piston in firing position by either of two methods described below.
a. Remove No. 1 spark plug and, with finger on plug hole, crank engine until
compression is felt in No. 1 cylinder. Continue cranking until pointer lines up with
timing mark on crankshaft pulley, or
b. Remove rocker cover and crank engine until No. 1 intake valve closes, continuing
to crank slowly until pointer lines up with timing mark on crankshaft pulley.
2. Position distributor to opening in block in normal installed attitude.
3. Position rotor to point toward No. 1 cylinder on cap (with distributor housing held in
installed attitude), then turn rotor counterclockwise approximately 1/8-turn more and
push distributor down to engage camshaft. It may be necessary to rotate rotor slightly
until camshaft engagement is felt.
4. While pressing down firmly on distributor housing, engage starter a few times to make
sure oil pump shaft is engaged. Install hold-down clamp and bolt and snug up bolt.
5. Place distributor cap in position and check that rotor lines up with terminal for No. 1 spark
plug. Install cap.
6. Time ignition.

Re: Distributor installation..

Well I got it in, but it's still slightly off....just a hair before #1....how can I fine tune it? i'm afraid I won't be able to get it as close if I take it out again? Is the oil pump shaft causing it to be a little off?

Thanks

Re: Distributor installation..

Checked it again.....my rotor is on the mark i made, it is just on the edge of it, and not dead center.....is this close enough so I can adjust it later?

Thanks

Re: Distributor installation..

Now just twist the dist, to get it timed.
You are OK

Ok, do it now before I lock it down?

Thanks

Re: Distributor installation..

Lock it down enough, so you can still twist it, so as to keep it from juping up, and changing time, due to gear jumping.
