On my 1981 75 HP Evinrude how critical is this gasket, #25 in the attached photo. This gasket appears to be missing on my engine and it looks like a lot of work to replace it. If it is missing what would be the side effects? Incase the gasket # is not clearly visiable in the photo. It is the gasket that goes between the bottom of the base plate and the exhaust tube.

Re: Gasket Question

I don't understand. How do you know if it is missing unless you have it apart? And if you have it apart, what is the big deal about putting one in there?

As far as how critical it is, I don't know the answer. However, why would they put one in there if it wasn't needed?

P.S., I went to the BRP website to see what gasket you are talking about.

Re: Gasket Question

Thanks F_R for going to the parts web site to see the image, I didn't realize the image would post so small on the forum. Please allow me to explain what I mean when I say that the gasket appears to be missing, I was doing some other work on the engine with the power head off when I noticed that I could not see an edged to a gasket where these two surfaces come together and I did not go any farther with trying to replace it at time because it looked like a lot of work getting the base plate off.

Re: Gasket Question

My advice is to assume it is OK. In fact, I am not so sure that you could see the edges anyway. Leave it alone.
