Ok i got this motor and the previous owner has a steering cable that is bent to the right of the motor from looking at it(steering 2 pic). I have existing cabeling on my boat that i want to use(steering 4 pic). For some reason i cant get this piece out of the motor(steerint 6 and steering 4 pics). I dont know if it is stuck inside there but it is the piece that the linkage of the motor hooks up too. The cable that im trying to use is the exact same thing just the way it hooks to the dash is completely different. So i want to pull the piece out of the motor mount or clamp whatever its called (steering 2 pic)and insert my steering piece through there and hook the linkage up to that. Its the same thing i measured it with a micrometer and it will work i just cant seem to get the old one out. Is there a screw somewhere that acts as a tensioner to tighten up the rod that goes through there?? Maybee if i loosen up that i can do it. Ive tried pumping greese in there through the greese fittings and banging it with a hammer but nothing. If i hook up the linkage to whats there i cant move it left to right for nothing. Ive added pics to what im talking about. Any help would be greatly apreciated. My cable has the same big nut that will hook up to the motor and allow the rod to come out of the other side and the linkage can hook to that. It will be easy if i can get the old one out of there.

Re: Steering help on 115 yamaha 115etlj

I feel your pain. I spent a lot of time today with WD-40, hammers, hacksaw and a mapp gas torch trying to remove the same part from my Mercury outboard. Seems the previous own used saltwater and dirt for lube. For round 2 I'm probably going to remove the whole pivot (the part the steering part goes through) so I can apply more heat and hammer blows without fear of breaking the transom, hitting the engine housing, or catching the boat on fire with the torch. I just have to find a suitable temporary pivot. Hope yours goes easier than mine has been.

rheagler, If you dont mind let me know how it turns out. Im getting ready to try again to get the thing out of mine. I Put a lot of marine greese in there yesterday and am about to go back at it with a hammer. And to do what you are talking about i think you have to remove the engine if im not mistaken. Im not really wanting to do that unless i get really bad into a jam. Thanks for your input.

You are right in that is going to be a pain. They gave up and cut the cable when it wouldn't give to them. If you are running single cable steering, you might consider adding the dual cable tube and using it.

Drewmitch, You shouldn't have to remove the engine to remove the pivot. I'm going to use a piece of 3/4" pipe to push the pivot out- the pipe then taking it's place and becoming a temporary pivot. I hope to have time to do this tuesday. I will let you know what happens.

Ray- what is this "dual cable tube"? can it be used to replace a single cable setup while leaving the stuck parts in the motor?

It is the tube which bolts to the engine for dual steering. It can be used in place of the engine tube. You would have to be sure the old cable is removed enough to keep it from interfering with the steering.

Re: Steering help on 115 yamaha 115etlj

Well see my problem is that i dont have enough room to hit the end of the old part with a hammer because of the splashwell getting in the way. I think that if i could lift the motor and hit it a few times with a hammer it will free up. I just dont have the room to hit it with the splashwell in the way. It will be easy i think after i get it removed i just have to get a lot of greese in there for the new steering and it should just slide right in. I think that the problem im having is that it is slightly bent and that is whats keeping it from coming out. There is 4 little holes in front of the piviot and i dont know if there is allen bolts in there for putting tension on the steering part that is stuck in there. If thats the case i think that if i loosen those that it will help but my manual does not cover the clamp part to tell me whats in there. Thanks ill let you know what happens. I dont know how im going to lift the motor off there but well see.

More likely it got bent when they were trying to get it out. Normally corrosion is what is holding it and if you remove it you will need to clean up the inside of the tube before hanging another one in it.

Ray - Thanks for the dual cable info, I'll check into it.

Drewmitch - I got my pivot tube out pretty easily, slid a piece of pipe in it's place. If I can get the old stuff out I'll be in good shape. I cut my old steering cable part off to get hammer swinging room, but my transom and splashwell might be wider than yours.
