hi all . i have a 1985 johnson 120 that i took in to the shop because it was slow taking off and it also had a miss in it . the shop checked the timing and did a compression check they were ok . the shop changed the plugs the wires and the four coils and the fuel filter . they called me and said it ran great . the bill was 1000.00 i took it home and it didnot run anybetter than when i took it there , they told me they used a portable tank to try it out . they said something must be wrong with my built in tank . i went to the store and bought a portable tank . ihooked it up and the motor still misses after all this work . does anyone out there have an idea why this motor still misses after all this work ? .thanks .

Yea I have an idea.

THERE IS SOMETHING ELSE WRONG.

Sorry couldn't resist. Could be fuel related. When were the carbs last maintained?

Re: its still missing .

little more detail, please:
VRO or premix?
Does it misfire at idle, and/or at WOT, and/or all RPMs in between?
Describe the appearance of the spark plugs immediately after its been running, note especially any differences in them and which holes they came from.
What are the compression numbers?
Anything else the shop did that you didn't mention before?

Curious, if the misfire is being caused by a fuel tank issue, wonder why they replaced plug wires & coils...........................

the motor is premix .plugs all look good .bogging when you go to take off . you can feel the motor missing at about half throttle . the motor use to be a 1986 140 but it now has a 1985 120 head on it . it was on there when i bought it .now he is trying to find out if they used the 140 carbs on the 120 block . compression is around 125 in all four cyl .i am going to check the pickup tube in the built in tank before i start using it again .

Re: its still missing .

so the symptoms are exactly the same now as before you took it in? I'd insist on getting those coils back, they must be good - if ya can't get a refund, at least you'll have a full set of spares. Wonder why they didn't tell you about your fuel tank issues?

Has the motor always run like this since you bought it? Starts good, idles good, runs good at low speed and WOT, but only misfires at half throttle?

If the shop says it runs great on their gas then take it back there and have them prove it to you while your there to hear it "run great".
Then if it does not "run great" tell them they did not fix it in the first go around.

Hi,
I'll be interested to hear what you find out; I'm having the same problem with my 1990 90 hp evinrude after a $1800.00 powerhead and carb rebuild; idles fine and runs fine up to about half throttle; then anything over about 3500 rpm it misses and has NO power. Good luck.

I'm having a hard time understanding why anybody is paying $1000 and $1800 and taking their supposedly-repaired engines to other places for second opinions. Dealers will NEVER develop ethics if you don't hold their heads underwater and make them accountable for what they did--or didn't--do. This makes it tough on the rest of the dealers, and on those of us independents who get called to a job not knowing the owner got royally screwed by the previous repair person. If this were your car, would you have followed the same path? Am I the only tech who respects his customers, does the job right before giving it back, and stands behind his work? Geez....

Re: its still missing .

Hello canman
I am having a similar problem on my 89 110 Johnson. It runs a little rough up to about 2000rpm, then 2000-3000 is really bad,+3000 runs great. If you try to throttle up from below 2000rpms it will usually do good.If you are running between 2000-3000 and try you can forget it, it bogs down and will drop back to 2400 and thats it. The guy at the boat shop is trying to get it fixed. If he does I will let you know. In the mean time if you find out anything plese pass it on. Thanks

could that be that your timing advance is not in sync with throttle opening?

Grid, apparently you are in the minority here. My boat is back to the shop for the 4th time since the rebuild; and it still doesn't run right. Just curious........how do you suggest I handle this? So far I've been nice about it but I'm nearing the end of my rope with him; summer is more than half over here in Maine and I've had the use of my boat 4 days. Thanks.

I would make dang sure you don't have a bad spot in your plug wire(s) somewhere. An itty bitty pin hole anywhere near where the wires are anywhere near metal.
