My transom was originally built with several pieces of wood so do you think it would be okay if i just cut the wood that is rotted in the center and put new wood in from the top. Please Check out the pictures and tell me the best way to tackle this job. I don't want to have to remove the cap over the gunnels if at all possible.
let me know your opinion
thanks in advance

Re: Transom Replacement

i have not used this stuff but from reading past post a product called SEACAST sounds like what you could use. take a look about 4 or 5 pages back there are some other post on transom replacement and rotted wood in transoms. you remove all the rotted wood and pour this stuff in place of the wood. just google it! just my $0.02. good luck!

Re: Transom Replacement

You have given us a problem - you want the best way to do the job yet you don't want to remove the cap - sorry.

Your way can work but it is not likely to be as strong or last as long. Wood rot is caused by fungus and if not completely removed or killed will keep growing.

Re: Transom Replacement

Thanks for your quick replies

Okay i have decided to do the completer transom for sure. It will not really be any easier in the long run for me to just repair it because as you said it will just continue to rot. Now my question is should I do seacast or cut the back and redo with plywood. I read the post about seacast and it seems like a great product but i a wary of trying it with a large motor. What do you guys think real wood or seacast?
