Can power launching affect performance?

1996 3.0 Mercruiser, 1950 Bayliner Capri

I installed a rebuilt carb last month and the first time out on the lake it worked great, in fact I picked up an additional 15 MPH to 45 MPH from the previous carb.

Yesterday top speed was barely 30 MPH and when I accelerated the engine sounded like it was dogging but when I accelerated in neutral it was very strong.

The only thing that happened out of the ordinary is when I was launching, I had to gun it a few times to back off the trailer. Is this a no-no and could this have contributed to the problem?

Nope,.........

It sounds more like you've got another load of Water,+ Crap in your Fuel......
Change the Filters again,+ See......
