Evinrude Oil Mix

I recently acquired a 1982 4.5 Horse Evinrude 2 Stroke. I stick to Johnson/Evinrude 2 cycle oil (XD-30). Should I mix it 50:1? The motor smokes a little with the 50:1 mix is why I was wondering if I should be using less oil. I ran a compression check on it and with a warm motor and open throttle I had 75 lbs. compression per cylinder. Is this low or in the normal range? Thanks

I believe all evinrudes run a 50:1 mix. I heard of Evinrude doing 100:1 but later changing back to 50:1 due to many failures. I also think 75 lbs in a little low.

50:1 is right i have an 87 8hp rude, and the sticker on it says 100:1 but everyone i talked to said mix it 50:1 because evinrude swithched it because of too many problems

It's a 2-stroke. By design, they smoke. If you object to the smoke, use 100% Full Synthetic TC-W3 outboard motor oil. It will still smoke some, but nowhere near as much. Bio-degradeable too.

No I don't mind a little smoke. I'll try the synthetic oil, though. I thought 75 lbs compression sounded low so I thought I might be due for a set of rings. Any other opinions on that?

I would guess with the low compression and the extra smoke that maybe you should look into doing a decarb on this motor. This could fix both of your problems. Excessive carbon could cause excessive smoke and also sticky rings causing low compression. IMO :D

I wouldn't call 75psi low on a rope start engine if the cylinders match. I would call it good.

There is too much importance placed on absolute psi measurements when differences in guages and technique can make as much as 50psi difference.

The important thing is matching compression between cylinders when both are measured the same way.
