setting up a jack plate

Can anyone tell me where to start when setting up a jack plate? I'm clueless about what to try to achieve other than the holeshot.

You should be able to run the motor considerably higher than mounted on the transom. Keep moving the motor up until you start to get prop blowout when you are trimmed all the way out.​
