Is there an aftermarket carb to replace the Mercarb? Something that does not require the replacement of intake or alot of mods? I cannot seem to find one. I would replace my carb with the original just want to see if I have any options. Merc 305, 200hp, 2 barrel, aplha one
Mechanic says I have a bad casting and a new one will cost me $500.00. Willing to pay that much just wondering if maybe edelbrock had a 2 barrel.

A remaned carb means they only replace components if they are damaged??
Thanks in advance.

Do you have a NAPA in your area?

You may be surprised what they can get. And reasonably priced. Call them.

Bad Casting? Possible, but rare. Sierra and Mallory remans are exactly, that all replacable partrs are replaced, all surfaces are redressed, shaft bushings installed, so as to be as good or better than the original carb. I have no problem selling them if I find a carb too sloppy for a rebuild.

Thanks Charlie,

I did not want to buy a mercarb and have the same problems. I called a company last week to see what was actually replaced in a remaned carb and the gentleman said ( I Don't Know ). I will just buy a Mercarb this fall from another company

You might consider a new intake and 4brl marine carb. A 1409 Edelbrock goes for about $300. You will need some misc parts such as fuel line and flame arrestor, but should be close to the price of Mercarb. You will get some more hp (how much, depends on your year engine). Also, gas miliage should not suffer as long as you control your right hand.

I thought about the intake and 4 barrel, but I am under the impression with all the work that has to be done it's not worth it. If I had the extra money I would do that, I cannot find a decent price on a cast iron intake manifold. If you know of a place let me know. That motor is a 1989 GM 305

Your other choice might be to go to Flying Fish Marine Carbureters for a manufactured one. If the casting is bad they might disallow your core......but the core price is only around $90.

Re: Mercarb Aftermarket equivilant?

Bondo, I can go to the auto junk yard and get a 305 4 barrel intake as long as it cast iron and it would be a fairly easy swap.

I looked at flying fish but since my top of carb is oval instead of round from being dropped by previous owner it is toast. There are a couple of places I have looked that don't have a core charge www.ebasicpower.com

Thanks guys
